Our Organic Caisse Formula is a simple formula that blends four commonly available herbs from which a decoction is made. Rene Caisse, a Canadian nurse, developed the formula from a recipe originally devised by a Native American medicine man at the end of the 19th century.
Caisse Tea is a blend of four commonly available herbs from which a tea is made.
At The Organic herb Trading Company we offer the packaged ingredients ready to make Caisse Tea.
24 parts chopped Burdock Root (Arctium Lappa)
16 parts fine cut Sheep Sorrel (Rumex Acetosella)
4 parts powdered inner bark of Slippery Elm (Ulmus Rubra)
1 part powdered Rhubarb Root (Rheum Palmatum)
I x box contains: Burdock/Sheep Sorrel net weight 120g.
Slippery Elm/Rhubarb Root net weight 15g
We also produce a Caisse Tincture on our farm in Somerset. This is made from the same four herbs, in the same proportions (detailed above), the only additional ingredients being organic alcohol and water.
First Stage – Bring 1.5 litres of bottled still spring water to a rolling boil in an enamel, glass or stainless steel pot with a well fitting lid. Stir in 15g of the Caisse, replace the lid and boil for 10 minutes. Remove from the heat. Stir the mixture thoroughly with a clean spoon, scraping down the sides of the pan. Cover and allow to cool for 10 – 12 hours overnight.
Second Stage – Re-heat to steaming point but do not re-boil. Allow the herbs to settle for a few minutes before straining through a stainless steel sieve into a measuring jug. Pour into sterilised bottles. Some sediment at the bottom of bottles is quite acceptable. Seal the bottles with sterilised lids to produce an airtight seal and cool quickly by standing bottles in tepid water.
Storage – The bottled tea is best stored in the fridge. If the tea develops a mould, discard immediately. Do not microwave. The correct tea should be pale to mid brown, occasionally greenish. The texture should be only very slightly viscous and it should taste pleasantly mild with a slightly woody flavour.
Directions For Use - Rene Caisse’s maximum recommended intake: Take 30ml of tea once daily with 60ml of hot water. Sip like tea, preferably before bedtime. Food should not be eaten within one hour of drinking the tea. Maintenance measure: Take 15ml of the tea in 30ml of hot water as above. There is no need to exceed the stated measure.
