Nobody could say it better than Sebastian Pole. Sebastian is the co-founder and tea smith at Pukka Herbs – he is also a great friend and supporter of Organic Herb Trading:
“Mike Brook is the epitome of an organic pioneer. He has helped Pukka source organic herbs and spices since our inception. With a far-reaching vision and a passionate determination to develop lasting relationships with growers. Mike is a leader in the British organic herb community.”
Organic Herb Trading was founded in 1982 by Mike Brook and Sebastian spent some formative years living in a caravan on Mike’s organic herb farm.
Following a number of conversations with herbalists regarding reliable supplies of high quality medicinal herbs, Mike realised that there was little or no traceability or knowledge about how they were grown. Mike has developed very efficient ways of growing herbs in the UK and has inspired a steady trail of enthusiasts to learn from him. He started to grow herbs on an acre of land in Hambleden – near Henley-on-Thames. Neal’s Yard – which opened in 1981 - was one of the first customers and we are very proud to still work in partnership with them today.
Mike started by supplying herbalists from his organic herb field in Oxfordshire. Following this, Hambleden Herbs was established to sell high quality organic teas, herbs and spices to the retail sector and over the years Mike has been responsible for some really significant firsts including being the first person in the UK to import organic Chamomile, Ginger and Peppermint. Hambleden Herbs was sold by Mike in 2004 – partly because he was becoming increasingly interested in sourcing and trading on a larger scale.
Today Organic Herb Trading sources products from over 40 countries and has established longstanding mutually beneficial relationships with growers worldwide and supplies some of the leading organic food producers in the UK.
